Levi's Denim
Levi Strauss & Co. traces its roots to 1853, when Bavarian-born merchant Levi Strauss came to San Francisco at 24 to open a West Coast branch of his brothers’ New York dry goods business. In 1872, Reno tailor Jacob Davis, one of his customers, proposed strengthening work pants with metal rivets at the points of strain. The two men received a patent for the riveted pants on May 20, 1873. The jeans now sold as the 501 were known as “XX” until 1890.
