About Big John

Big John began in 1940 as Maruo Clothing, a small sewing factory in Kojima, Okayama, founded by Kotaro Osaki to make workwear and school uniforms. The company turned to jeans in the 1960s, producing what it describes as Japan’s first domestically made jeans in 1965 under the Canton label, and launched the Big John name in 1967. In 1973, it introduced jeans made entirely in Japan, and it still produces its jeans domestically, including deep indigo selvedge denims developed for vintage-style fading.
