About NEEDLES
NEEDLES was founded by Keizo Shimizu in 1997 as a sub-brand of Nepenthes, the Tokyo-based label he started in 1988. Shimizu began the line as American-made goods grew harder to find in the 1990s, giving vintage Americana a Japanese interpretation. Its first piece was a loose-fitting suit jacket inspired by one Miles Davis wore in the 1960s. The brand is known for its track pants and its butterfly embroidery, a motif that references Steve McQueen’s tattoo in Papillon and appears on its 12oz Japanese-made denim.
